Portland park to undergo renovations

The city of Portland is planning to renovate Gabriel Park with the expectation of creating a destination playground. Residents of Tigard will want to experience this updated park once the work is completed.

The northeastern segment of the park, which is 91 acres in size, will get new spaces for picnicking and new playground equipment. These areas will triple in size from 3,200 square feet to 10,000 square feet.

A rubberized surface will replace the current work chips, and pathways will be updated to comply with standards set by the Americans With Disabilities Act. A new drinking fountain will be added, and one restroom will be renovated. The cost for all these upgrades is $4m.

The off-leash dog area, skate park, two baseball fields, and tennis courts will not be changed but upgrades will be made to the parking lot. Some new trees will also be planted to create an urban canopy.

Banner printing can be used at such sites to inform the community of such updates and keep them abreast of their progress.

Gary Datka, a project manager with Portland Parks and Recreation, said that this park provides a terrific opportunity for residents. Its history is rooted in the agriculture and dairy industries as the original owner of the land, Ulrig Gabriel, a German immigrant, was a farmer, who grew corn, oats, and clover, and had a herd of 80 cows.
