New plaza to open in downtown Tigard

There will be a grand opening for Universal Plaza in Tigard this weekend.

Universal Plaza has taken 15 years to plan and develop. Community development director of Tigard, Kenny Asher, said the opening of Universal Plaza is a significant milestone in the history of Tigard. He added that voters passed a bond to fund a plaza in the downtown area and the plan was always to celebrate public life here. He said that this demonstrates Tigard’s commitment to its plans and to making the city more accessible, healthy, and walkable.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication with current mayor Heidi Lueb and some former mayors who helped to make this plaza possible. The Tigard High School marching band will be playing, with other activities including an appearance from a large bubble maker and a group of clowns who make balloon animals while riding tall bikes.

There will also be five booths setting up shop from the Tigard Farmers Market, which will be in the plaza beginning next month. West Coast Torta Co. and Harvest Moon Experience, two food carts, will be serving food at the grand opening. Such vendors can turn to local Print shops to provide printed materials to promote their cuisine and offerings.

The grand opening will take place this Saturday, April 15, beginning at 11:00 am.
