New middle school starts construction

Construction is underway on a new Gardiner Middle School, which might be one of the last large school building projects in the Portland area. Residents of Tigard will be interested in following the progress of the building.

BRIC Architecture designed the state-of-the-art school which is expected to cost $90 million. Dave Johnson, a principal in charge with BRIC Architecture, said that the design process has been unique in that 37 middle school students were part of the design committee which provided a very different perspective on the building. He said they contributed some very valuable ideas.

The new building will be student-friendly and based on the school’s organization into teams where there are two for each grade. Each team has five teachers and 150 students. There will be spaces called learning neighborhoods where the teams will be able to work. There will also be spaces that can serve many needs, such that students can eat lunch and also do homework or be in a quiet space and eat. Such new buildings may want to consider employing a new Logo Design to feature such new elements in the school.

The building is being constructed on the running track. When the students move into the building, the old one will be demolished and a new athletic field will replace it.

The new middle school is expected to be open in August 2021.
