New light rail planned to reduce traffic in Tigard

A light-rail project is currently being planned between Portland and Tualatin.

It will be 12 miles long and will have bridges for the trains that go over Highway 217 and local streets in Tigard. Bridges will also be constructed to travel over and under Southwest Barbur Boulevard and over Interstate 5 in Portland. The last five miles of the main road into Portland will also be widened so the rail line can run down its center, with two lanes for traffic in each directions and bike lanes next to the sidewalks.

Flyer printing can be used so that those who travel such routes become aware of such projects and how they will affect them.

Leah Robbins, project manager for TriMet, commented that this is a major infrastructure project and will completely change the appearance of the Southwest Corridor. TriMat has found this corridor to be one the fastest growing in Oregon with an increase in the number of residents in the area to grow by 75,000 by 2035, leading to increased congestion on the Interstate between Portland and Tigard in future years.

As a result of this new light rail, the trip through the corridor would be 30 minutes. There would be 3,500 parking spaces at several Park & Ride lots and up to 13 new train stations. The project is expected to get underway in 2022, provided it can be funded.
