Ground has been broken on University Plaza in Tigard, a downtown revitalization project on Southwest Burham Street.
The project spans about 1.8 acres. The first phase of the project is expected to cost $5.6m and will have a water feature and splash pad, as well as a boardwalk with a connection to the Fanno Creek Trail, porch swings, and public restrooms. There will be lights and intricate stonework around the water feature and many of the natural elements will be kept intact. More details about such projects are often provided with flyer printing. Funding for the project will come from the urban renewal fund of the city and charges from the parks system development.
Jason Snider, mayor of Tigard, said that this is a gathering spot in the city for which many have been waiting a long time, and it will also celebrate the shared humanity in the community. Snider added that many people have been an inspiration for the project, from design advisors and local artists to downtown businesses.
Firms that have been working on the project include the lead designer, RIOS, and the designers of the splash pad, which is Fluidity Design Consultants of Portland. Alta Planning + Design designed the boardwalk.
The second phase of the project will include community picnic tables and a large architectural canopy.
