Unlit holiday tree waits in Courthouse Square

The 2021 holiday tree was delivered to Pioneer Courthouse Square on November 5 by Redmond Heavy Hauling, which transported the 75-foot-tall Douglas fir to Portland.

The City of Roses has not officially started the holiday season but the arrival of Portland’s tree downtown means it is on its way. Stimson Lumber Company donated the tree, which will remain dark until the tree lighting ceremony.

Once the tree made its appearance in Pioneer Courthouse Square it was unloaded and trimmed and set into position by a crane and secured in place near the square’s center.

People on the square during the delivery and set up used their phones to record the process, awestruck by the large-scale operation. “Lumberjack Santa” escorted the tree on its journey to its place of honor on Pioneer Square and handed out miniature candy canes to those who were on hand to see the tree go up.

Many turn to local Print shops to have their seasonal photographs turned into Postcards or holiday greeting cards

This year will mark the 37th tree lighting on the square; however, instead of the hoped for in-person event, the annual tree lighting ceremony will be held as a virtual event with KGW broadcasting the ceremony live in order to protect the public from the pandemic.

Portland’s holiday tree will remain dark until 6:00 pm the day after Thanksgiving, November 26, when it will be lighted up.
