SmartAsset recently conducted a study to discover which U.S. cities were the best when it comes to providing work-from-home employment, and Portland took fifth place.
On average, the commute time for U.S. workers is 27.1 minutes at a cost of $2,600 a year, according to the Citi ThankYou Premier Commuter Index and 2018 Census Bureau estimates. The cost in time and money is substantial, and moreover, telecommuting provides working parents with more flexibility.
The metrics used to determine the rankings are: percentage of employee telecommuting, the change in percentage for telecommuting from 2013 to 2018, the unemployment rate, the cost of housing as a percentage of earnings, poverty rate, the density of coffee shops, and the bar density. The 100 largest U.S. cities were compared in these seven metrics.
In Portland, around 9.6% of employees are telecommuters, giving the City of Roses the third-highest rating in this metric. Portland did well in coffee shop density at 1.53%, and bars make up 1.22% of all establishments – the second highest and fifth-highest ranking respectively. By performing strongly in these three categories, it is not surprising that Portland comes in No. 3 among cities where millennials are relocating.
Competition among realtors is highest when the demand for housing goes up, taking the demand for poster and business card printing services up as well.
Ranking four through one were Boise, ID; Arlington, VA; Denver, CO; and Scottsdale, AZ.
