Portland student sworn in as Oregon's Kid Governor

Earlier this month, Oregon saw a governor sworn into office - its “Kid Governor.”

Like the adult governor, Taneesh Garg of Portland was elected in November. He prevailed over a field of 18 nominees and was voted into office by the state’s fifth graders. His cabinet is made up of the runners-up for the office.

The road to becoming Kid Governor began with a one-to-three-minute video created by each candidate explaining why they should have the position, outlining their leadership skills, and laying out a community issue they feel to be important. They also had to explain their three-point plan that can be implemented by fifth graders to address that community issue.

One can only imagine the excitement of a fifth grader who can order Business Cards with his name and position as Kid Governor, or that of a member of the cabinet.

Taneesh Garg’s platform was anti-racism. In his position as Oregon’s Kid Governor, he wants to raise awareness, arrange a safe place for kids to communicate their experiences with each other, and take measures to support other cultures.

The purpose behind the Kid Governor program is to help kids learn about state government and elections. Oregon was the second state in the U.S. to undertake the Kid Governor program in 2017.

Garg attends the K-8 Springville school, part of the Beaverton School District.
