In 2019, Portland’s Hip-Hop Day transformed into a weeklong event, and this year it is undergoing another transformation to avoid succumbing to cancellation or postponement.
Portland Hip-Hop Week is still a go, following a similar model to last years expanded event, yet as an almost wholly virtual affair. At the moment, the only events that have been announced are an award ceremony recognizing members of the local hip-hop scene and a live stream from the Crystal Ballroom of the long-running showcase Mic Check.
In the near future, per the Facebook page of Portland Hip-Hop, an open call will go out for more Hip-Hop Week events. Annual events supply many members of the local business community with branding and marketing opportunities through the distribution of Promotional Products.
The event began as Hip-Hop Day in 2015, a one-day concert held outside Portland City Hall. The concert was the brainchild of StarChile to celebrate the music genre, as well as a means to build bridges between the local hip-hop community and city.
In 2019, a variety of organizers stretched the one-day event into a weeklong festival that boasted not only a long list of concerts, but other events such as fashion pop-ups and even fishing contests.
This year the event will run August 20 to 26 on an online basis.
