The inaugural certified Living Building Challenge (LBC) project for Portland will be the new studio of Mahlum Architect’s.
The International Living Future Institute’s LBC certification program is among the world’s most demanding sustainable building programs. It outlines the most advanced degree of sustainability, thereby providing a context for construction, design, and the interdependent relationship between a building’s environment and the people who inhabit it.
Stationery printers are frequently called upon to add awards and certifications to a company’s letterhead and Business Cards.
Mahlum issued a press release explaining that the decision to pursue LBC certification was made by the company’s architects. A Northwest firm, Mahlum has offices in Seattle as well as Portland. According to the release, Mahlum made this choice with the hope of altering the company’s practice through the transformation of its space.
The specific certification earned for the studio was the Petal certification. To do this, guidelines of the Material Petal had to be followed, generally held to be the toughest of the LBC Petals when taking the traditional design process and truths of the construction industry into account.
Furthermore, the Place, Equity and Beauty Petals guidelines were met by the project in addition to fulfilling the requirements of the Health and Happiness Petal. To achieve these Petals, input was needed from the Mahlum staff, the strategic project partners (particularly Sustainable Northwest Wood, Salvage Works, and Perlo Construction), and the project’s design team.
