After announcing back in January that it was putting the Hampton Opera Center on the market it was recently announced that the Southeast Portland property overlooking the Willamette River has been sold.
The property, which the Portland Opera has used as a headquarters for 20 years, was purchased by the Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest (NARA-NW). The Portland Opera board of directors had announced in January that it planned to put the property on the market as it was planning on finding a new headquarters.
NARA-NW, which bought the building at 211 S.E. Caruthers Street as well as the neighboring 299 S.E. Caruthers Street, is a Portland nonprofit that currently has its administration offices housed at 1776 S.W. Madison Street in Goose Hollow. The organization’s mission is to assist with health and substance-abuse treatment services focusing on Native communities.
A change in address necessitates updates to an organization’s business stationer.
In an email statement, the Portland Opera clarified its plans saying that it would temporarily sharing space with the Metropolitan Group, a communications firm, in downtown’s Public Will Building until it found a new permanent location.
The Hampton Opera Center was named for timber executive John Hampton who was also an avid opera enthusiast. Hampton was the driving force behind Portland Opera’s $25 million fundraiser in 2003.
The nonprofits arts group purchased the building in 2003 for $5.79 million from Meredith Corp. and sold it to NARA-NW for $11 million.
