Custer Park to get new name

Amanda Fritz, soon-to-be former Portland City Commission member, has announced that Custer Park in Southwest Portland will be renamed.

Fritz, who oversees Portland’s Bureau of Parks & Recreation until her term ends on December 31, has announced that she has directed her staff to commence the engagement process to find the public recreation area a new name. According to a recently released statement by Fritz, until such a time as a suitable name is selected, the park will be referred to simply as “A Park”.

Custer Park got is name from General George Armstrong Custer, who in addition to being a Civil War general, made war against Native Americans. For several years an effort has been underway to remove the general’s name from the park, with many involved in the movement pointing out that there is no connection between Custer and the city of Portland or the state.

Flyer printing services provide an effective and inexpensive method of bring an issue to the public.

Approximately two years ago, the activism site Change.org started a petition to rename the park for Portland-based civil rights advocate Beatrice Morrow Cannady. Cannady was co-founder of the city’s NAACP chapter and served as editor of The Advocate. Almost 1,400 signatures were gathered for the petition, with many of those added this year.

The name change for Custer Park will be the second such renaming process; Wilson High School is in line to be renamed in 2021.
