The Japanese holiday of Kodomo no Hi, which is a day set aside to celebrate all children, is being observed at The Japanese Garden here in Portland this May.
The Portland Japanese Garden, located at 611 SW Kingston Avenue, offers a way to learn about Japanese culture in a quiet, serene environment, as well as experience various Japanese celebrations, such as the upcoming Kodomo no Hi. The day, which will be observed on May 7, will include a variety of activities, some of which mirror those that take place in Japan on the holiday.
Print shops are often asked to create Postcards and Posters for venues like this to sell.
In Japan, special shobu leaves (sweet flags) are placed in children’s baths on Children’s Day to ward off evil spirits. Also, youngsters are served special delicacies such as chimaki (bamboo leaf-wrapped sticky rice dumplings) and kashiwa-mochi (steamed dumplings containing sweet bean paste wrapped in oak leaves).
At the Portland celebration, koinobori (carp streamers made from cloth) are flown to attract good fortune to children. Families can enjoy taiko music performed by young people, and kids can make their own origami and take part in a scavenger hunt.
