British-style pub reopens in Portland

The Moon & Sixpence is finally back in business following its pandemic-induced shutdown, so that once again fans of Irish and English pub ales, American craft beer, and authentic pub food can visit the Portland establishment.

Named for the Somerset Maugham novel published in 1919, “The Moon”, as its regulars frequently call it, is much like the world-famous Horse Brass in style and tone. Founded in 1999, the pub has managed to keep a low profile, despite its regular live jug music and string bands, traditional European food, and corner lanes for darts.

The Moon has little social media presence and promotes neither its live music nor beer events frequently. This apparently has enabled the pub to avoid beer trends and maintain its special ambiance. Also, unlike many food and drink establishments that have reopened, the Moon’s wide-ranging English pub menu is returning intact with Welsh rarebit, curried chips, and fish and chips among the favorites.

Many food establishments are reopening with the help of local Print shops to supply them with disposable Menus, as a precaution from the pandemic.

The Moon & Sixpence can be found conveniently close to the Hollywood Transit Station max stop and offers ample street parking with bike racks nearby. Hours are 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm Monday through Thursday, and 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
