New license plate could become available in Oregon
Residents from Portland to Medford, Oregon may be able to obtain a license plate that will benefit marine research.
The license plate, which depicts a whale swimming through the ocean with the words “Coastal Playground” at the bottom of the picture and a small lighthouse in the top left corner, will go towards supporting marine mammal research at Oregon State University. If the University manages to sell enough vouchers, the Oregon DMV will start producing the license plates for those who purchased them.
So far, the University has managed to sell 1,000 vouchers at $40 per license plate, so it is a third of the way towards its target of 3,000. Out of the $40 that someone pays for the license plate, $35 will go towards the research program. Vouchers can currently be purchased online at the Oregon State University website.
Bruce Mate, a marine research specialist at the institute, said about the license plate program:
More information about the license plate’s availability, and the graphic design behind it, can be found on the KTVL News 10 website.

“We’ve heard a lot of enthusiastic support for the design of the plates and the concept of supporting whale conservation. We hope a lot of Oregonians will embrace the phrase ‘put a whale on your tail’ and purchase license plates for their vehicles.”
