Genre-blending quartet brings music to Medford

Medford’s Collier Center for the Performing Arts will soon be graced with the music from the American Patchwork Quartet, known for blending jazz, folk, and other genres.

The performance comes after the self-titled debut album picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Many band members are also past Grammy winners, including lead guitarist and vocalist Clay Ross. The other performers in the band are drummer Clarence Penn, jazz bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and vocalist Falguni Shah.

American Patchwork Quartet uses a melting pot of styles to hone its distinct sound, including elements of country music, West African and East Asian music, Southern roots, jazz, and gospel. The variety of backgrounds from each performer contributes to the band’s overall theme of symbolizing the cultural diversity of the US.

The group’s tour so far has included stops in Orlando and other locations in Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, and California, with performances in New Mexico, Vermont, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Montana to follow.
