Two classic holiday Disney films, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coco, are screening back-to-back as part of a matinee double feature at the Medford Library this fall.
Both films are musicals that center on a protagonist who enters an otherworldly dimension as they search for more meaning in their lives.
In The Nightmare Before Christmas, it is Chris Sarandon’s Jack Skellington, who is the King of Halloween Town, who ventures into the foreign Christmas Town via an enchanted forest with trees that contain portals to other dimensions. Enchanted, Skellington attempts to bring the Christmas traditions to Halloween Town, and eventually takes over for Santa Claus himself, to disastrous results.
The film was based on a story by Tim Burton, directed by Henry Selick, and features composer Danny Elfman’s singing voice for Jack Skellington’s musical numbers.
In Coco, the film heavily centers on the Mexican holiday Dias de los Muertos, and involves Anthony Gonzalez’s Miguel venturing into the Land of the Dead to try and trace his family’s musical lineage in connection with a legendary singer.
