Sci-fi classic screens in Medford

The Medford Library is hosting a screening of the sci-fi classic film The Abyss this December.

The screening is part of the library’s Ocean Movies series.

Focusing on a team of civilian divers searching for a lost nuclear submarine, a dangerous and mysterious discovery is made deep underneath the ocean.

Starring Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Ed Harris as Lindsey and Bud Brigman, respectively, they play an estranged married couple who must work together on this clandestine mission. Michael Biehn also stars as Lt. Hiram Coffey, the leader of a Navy SEAL team that is also part of the top-secret operation.

The Abyss, rated PG-13, snagged an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects after its 1989 release, as the film incorporated groundbreaking use of computer-generated imagery at the time.

In 2023, The Abyss was given a 4K remaster, overseen by writer-director James Cameron himself. The Abyss Collector's Edition was then released on physical media and returned to theaters for a single-day screening that same year.

Cameron, who helmed The Terminator and Aliens before The Abyss, would go on to craft other blockbuster classics, such as Terminator 2, Titanic and Avatar.

Movie screenings like this may choose to use graphic design services for movie programs, posters and social media content.

The Abyss is screening on December 4 from 1 pm to 3:50 pm in the large meeting room of the Medford Library at 205 S Central Ave in Medford.
