Southeastern Ohio has had some unusually warm weather recently, making it difficult for people who enjoy pursuing winter sports to do so, and a local skating rink has reported an uptick in business as a consequence.
Newark's Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena has seen an increase in people coming to the rink this year, because the weather has been so warm. Gary Baldwin, the arena's general manager, said this unexpected warmth has made a positive impact on the venue.
Baldwin says the Ice Arena offers an alternative to playing in snow or going skiing, especially for children. According to Baldwin, kids who enjoy athletics and are prevented from going skiing turn to the rink to try ice skating, and have a lot of fun.
Baldwin, who has been with the rink for six years, says he enjoys seeing families spending time together. He calls it “just wonderful” to see all the family members unite to enjoy a group activity, especially when he sees both parents and their children having fun. Baldwin has one more tip for people who plan to skate: make sure the skates are the proper size.
Arena management could capitalize on the increased attendance by working with a banner printing company to create colorful, attractive Banners of snow scenes, and hanging them throughout the rink to celebrate the fun of winter sports.
