Salvation Army makes early start to Christmas

Although the Christmas season is still months away, Newark’s Salvation Army is setting out its red kettles in the city and throughout the county, celebrating the holiday in July. Approximately 70 kettles will soon be in place.

The Salvation Army is undertaking this unusual effort to raise seriously needed funds so it can keep operating through the summer. According to Kaye Hartman, the Salvation Army’s volunteer coordinator, the organization does not have enough cash to keep running through the summer months.

The Salvation Army usually raises enough money during its traditional Christmas campaign to operate for the year. However, this year there were not as many mail-in donations as in past years, according to Denise Martin, a Salvation Army lieutenant who is in charge of the organization’s efforts in Licking County. At the same time, the needs of members of the community skyrocketed.

Last year, the Salvation Army raised over $117,000 in Newark at Christmas, with $5,550 collected via the kettles.

The campaign is using the familiar red kettles for its efforts. The effort began July 1 and runs through July 31, and aims to raise $5,000 during that period. This year marks the first time the Newark Salvation Army has run a summer campaign.

Efforts like this can get a helping hand if officials work with a printing company to take advantage of the Christmas theme, perhaps by creating Holiday Cards to announce the campaign.
