A new arts center has opened in Newark, offering classes in everything from weaving to calligraphy, according to an article in the Newark Advocate.
The center is the brainchild of Anton Sarossy-Christon, who grew up near Cleveland in what he describes as an “artistic family.” His aunts were fiber artists who were also interested in painting; his grandmother taught yoga; his grandfather was a violinist; and his mother taught Sarossy-Christon to knit when he was still a boy. Simply growing up in such an environment fueled his interest in performing and visual arts.
He was graduated from Ohio State University and joined a large retailer as part of its human resources department. In 2005, he returned to school for a master's in English education, and has been teaching English in Columbus since then. In 2009, he moved to Newark to begin farming.
Before the move, he says, he took ceramics classes in Columbus, and rediscovered his love of creative arts and artists. He then pondered operning a cultural center in Newark, and decided to go ahead with the project. Now, the center offers classes in arts like weaving, tai chi, and drawing. These courses are eight weeks long, but plans are in work to create shorter classes. Promotional Pens can be distributed by businesses like this to help build brand recognition.
Although the center was his creation, Sarossy-Christon prefers to work behind the scenes and smooth the way for the teachers and their students.
