Newark police and residents receive recognition

Newark police officers, as well as members of the community, received a number of honors recently.

May 18 was the day that the Newark Police Department held its annual awards ceremony. The event honors both police officers and community residents who had a positive influence on the Newark community.

Awards were given to over 40 officers for actions that went above and beyond their normal duties. Among these were awards for saving a family from a house fire, and helping a lost elderly man who had no family members in the local area.

Some of the most treasured awards were the Silver Cross, which went to Officer Jon Bell and Sgt. John Brnjic, who protected residents and one another in a shooting incident.

A Medal of Merit went to Officer Chelsea Rubio and Officer Mark Dickman, who saved a woman's life when she was attacked. Not only were they able to subdue the attacker, but they also provided emergency medical care to the victim until the arrival of paramedics.

Among the honors going to residents was a Public Safety Commendation that was awarded to Roger and Matthew Nice, who assisted a police officer in making an arrest.

Newark officials might like to work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for the city's residents, giving a full list of the awards and honorees.
