Newark gears up for benefit concert

This weekend will see the sixth year of the Annual Benefit Concert for the Cade and Katelyn Fund for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

When Brian Chute learned that friends of his had children inflicted with the disease, he decided to do something about it. Chute, the vocalist for the band Reptile Smile, suggested a benefit concert to help raise money for what became the ‘Cade and Katelyn Fund’, named after the friends' children who have the disease.

The first concert, in 2008, raised about $800. Last year's concert was the fifth, and brought in some $6,000. Over the five years since Chute started the event, he has raised more than $12,000.

When he first got the idea, Reptile Smile had just gotten back together, and the band was looking for new events and cool stuff to do. Chute said he wanted to use the band's power to bring people together, and decided that raising money for a good cause was the perfect answer.

This year's concert begins at 3:00 pm on July 26, at the Beverage Source, which is located in Newark at 551 West Church Street. There are four bands slated to appear, and while there is no admission fee to the event, patrons are encouraged to make donations at the door.

Chute and the band could work with a poster printing company to create Posters for the event, and later perhaps offer them for sale.
