Newark colleges go robotic

Students from around central Ohio met on the campus of the Central Ohio Technical College and Ohio State University-Newark this month to compete in the Lego robotics tournament.
Approximately 180 students gathered to put Lego robots through their paces. In the meantime, they also learned about the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math), and simply had fun.

This is the fourth such tournament sponsored by the colleges, which work closely together: LEGO, the toymaker; and FIRST, a Manchester, New Hampshire-based nonprofit organization that seeks to advance science. The acronym stands for ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology’.

On December 6, 23 teams comprised of students ranging in age from 9 to 14 put their projects together as they learned about math, science, and engineering. Perhaps more importantly, they also learned about innovation, research, and how to make presentations of their projects. They were also encouraged to be innovative in their thinking.

The contest robots could not be more than 12 inches in height, and had to be able to perform a number of tasks, including rotating and opening a door.

The top seven teams in this contest will move on to a district competition, and finally, to the state level.

Contest organizers could work with a banner printing company to create colorful Banners to display next year, to add to the fun of the event.
