Joshua Miller, who discovered his passion for the stage several years ago when he acted in community theater, has teamed up with Rebecca Johnson of Columbus to found the Newark-based Central Ohio Family Theatre.
The duo founded the new company to present family friendly productions that have a lot of roles for teens and younger children. The first show they plan to produce is ‘Anne of Green Gables’.
Miller said he and Johnson decided a community theater was needed in Newark, and it should be one that focused on plays and musicals suitable for families and children. Since none existed, they decided to start one. The new company will rehearse and perform in a space donated by a local church. They want not only actors, but they are also looking for people to work behind the scenes.
Anne of Green Gables is adapted from the classic novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery, and tells the tale of an 11-year-old orphaned girl adopted by middle-aged siblings who want a boy to work on their farm.
The show will run June 10, 11, and 12, and the group says it plans to produce other shows, and perhaps a holiday production as well. The theater could work with a poster printing company to create colorful placards and other paraphernalia to advertise the first show.
