New college program aims to meet employer demand

The Newark campus of the Ohio State University will join with others in the system to offer courses specifically designed to meet the needs of graduates' prospective employers.

Earlier this year, the Board of Trustees of the university approved a new degree: the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, with a concentration in manufacturing. The Marion, Mansfield, and Lima campuses will offer the degree starting in Fall 2020, with the Newark campus starting the courses in 2023.

The program is designed to prepare students for roles as the managers of manufacturing plants, by giving them a basic understanding of manufacturing engineering technology. Manufacturing has historically been the largest economic sector in Ohio, and is now growing again. This increase has resulted in a demand for graduates who combine engineering and managerial abilities.

The program was designed by members of the engineering faculty, who visited plants throughout the state, asking for input from engineers as to what skills were most required. The result is a program that features project-based courses that emphasize both technological expertise and hands-on skills in industrial robotics, electrical and mechanical processes, and change and project management.

University representatives also spoke with focus groups throughout Ohio, and looked at federal data to determine how students can become engineering technologists in a manufacturing setting. Brochure printing can be used in situations like this to explain new programs and projected outcomes.
