Library to present ancient skills class

The Licking County Main Library, located in Newark at 101 West Main Street, is about to host an intriguing class.

Various ancient skills known by Native Americans will be the subject of a class given by volunteers from the Flint Ridge Ancient Quarries and Nature Preserve. Admission to the event is free, and attendees are not required to register. The materials needed for the program will be provided.

The volunteers will demonstrate how to drill holes using a pump drill, flint-knapping, and how to throw an atlatl, which is a stick with a socket or hook on one end, and a handle on the other. A spear or other similar weapon fits into the socket. The thrower flips the atlatl, which hurls the spear much further and faster than if it were thrown by hand.

Event organizers might work with brochure printers to create a pamphlet explaining various aspects of life among ancient Native Americans. They could distribute the Brochures to people who attend the skills lecture, as well as making them available at the library for patrons in general.

The program is scheduled for tomorrow, September 19, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the library. Participants are asked to park in the parking lot in front, and walk down the alley to get to the event, which will be held on the west side of the library on the grass.
