The Market Sharpener will be offering its services at Wilson’s Garden Center in Newark this March.
Those interested in sharpening their household items can pay a visit to the Market Sharpener. The service allows participants to sharpen objects like kitchen knives, scissors, shovels, and pruners. Any knives brought to the event will be sharpened on a Tormek device with a water-cooled stone, and larger garden tools will be improved by using a Veil belt sander. Attendees are advised that the vendor cannot work on items such as lawn mower blades and stylist shears.
The service is run by Jim Allen, a former food industry executive who offers his skills at local markets. The Market Sharpener typically attends the Worthington Farmers Market, which takes place every Saturday between 8:00 am and noon. Allen has been sharpening the objects of others for eight years. He trained with Steve Bottorff, an experienced knife sharpener who wrote Sharpening Made Easy in 2002. Bottorff also created a DVD on improving sharpening skills.
Allen will be visiting Wilson’s Garden Center on Sunday, March 26 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The cost for the service starts at $4 for kitchen tools and $5 for garden tools. Guests may only bring four items to be sharpened. Those who provide services such as this can bring Business Cards with them to events to connect with clients.
