The Historical Society of Licking County is having a dance, and everyone in the area is invited.
The society will present an event called ‘Dancing through the Decades’ this weekend, in which performers will present a number of dances that have been popular throughout history.
Emily Larson, the society's curator, says that she got the idea for the event from a similar performance given by the historical society in her Minnesota hometown. Larson stays in contact with her friends in Minnesota, and when she heard about the other organization’s dance, she liked it immediately.
She contacted Everett McKee, who runs a group called the Motley Dance Club, to see if his organization would like to help put on the show. She describes McKee as “absolutely passionate about dance,” and was happy when he agreed. The group has been rehearsing for months.
The evening will begin with the minuet, which was first danced in 1650 in France. Other dances on the program include the waltz, jitterbug, hustle, tango, and contra dance. The dancers will wear clothing that suggests the decade in which the various dances were popular.
The performance is scheduled for this Saturday, February 21, at 7:00 pm at the Buckingham Meeting House in Newark. Tickets are available at the historical society's offices, or at the door.
Event organizers could work with a banner printing company to create a colorful banner to display indoors to celebrate the event.
