Concert planned to welcome the holidays

Everyone in the family will enjoy an upcoming concert, one that has become a Newark tradition.

The Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra is presenting its annual Holiday Pops concert, and will play traditional songs and favorites of the season. The concert is one of the orchestra's annual traditions, and is a popular way to start the holidays. In addition to the orchestra, the choirs from both Granville High School and Newark High School will perform, and rumor has it that Santa Claus will be on hand to enjoy the music.

The orchestra has a long history. Dr. John Fleek Miller founded The Licking County Symphony in 1939, and it performed on the campus of Denison University, with Maestro Sam Gelfer on the podium. Conductor Frank Bellino took over when Gelfer retired, and was the conductor until 1992, when the orchestra was renamed as the Welsh Hills Symphony Orchestra, and Williams Boggs became conductor. Carey Dachtyl succeeded Boggs 10 years later.

In 1990, another group, The Land of Legend Philharmonic was formed. William Baker conducted the philharmonic, which merged with Welsh Hills to form the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra in 2005. The Newark-Granville Youth Symphony formed at the same time.

The concert is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm on December 8, at the Midland Theatre on North Park Place in Newark. Flyer printing can be used to create programs for events like this.
