Middleburg Heights gains grocery outlet

Grocery shoppers in Middleburg Heights will have a new shopping venue in 2026.

Michigan-based retailer Meijer is expanding its Ohio presence with a new supercenter at the site of the former Sears store in town. The company reportedly paid $5.5 million for the property on West 130th Street. Demolition of the former business is expected to commence in August, with construction slated to begin in Spring 2026. Banner printing and other services from Print shops are often used to publicize store openings like this.

The new facility will feature over 70,000 square feet of floor space, consisting of general merchandise as well as a full complement of groceries. Patrons will enjoy one-stop shopping, as an on-site Meijer Express gas station is planned, as well as a 20,000-square-foot garden center. Importantly, the new store will bring around 300 new jobs for local residents. The store is considered an anchor for the Southland Business District, part of a continued revitalization effort between city government and the business community.

Mayor Matt Castelli stated his happiness with the development at a City Council meeting:

“We felt it was critical for the City of Middleburg Heights to set some direction for Southland Shopping District. That vacant property … sat there year after year, so we’re excited about this opportunity.”

Founder Fred Meijer began the chain with family members and cites the company’s customer-centric approach as one centered on constant improvement and competitive spirit.
