Many train lovers here in West Columbus will be heading to the Paul Busse Garden Railway opening at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in early May.
The railway experience will be a set of nine G-scale model trains running on over 1,000 feet of track through four themed areas. The European Travels area will be miniature villages composed of all-natural plant materials. The 11 buildings include Swiss chalets, German houses, Old World manors, a French train station, a German bakery, and two lighthouses. Natural plantings will include fern-like plants, Irish moss, and snow flurry asters.
The Who Lives Here? area will feature imaginative structures where animals such as peacocks, turtles, and squirrels might live. Plants have been thoughtfully placed so that each building looks like it has a yard, with laceleaf Japanese maples at the giraffe's house, tickseed at opossum place, pincushion flowers at the porcupine's, and silver thyme at the skunk's abode.
Fairytale Land has 15 structures, including Cinderella's castle and carriage, Rapunzel's tower, the Three Little Kittens' home, and Peter Rabbit's house. Another 13 structures recreate Wild West Town and will include a hotel, general store, water tower, jail, schoolhouse, and various saloons.
The Paul Busse Garden Railway will open Saturday, May 16 and run until January 3, 2027 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm daily at E Livingston Avenue, Columbus.
