The upcoming edition of the annual Port Summer Show will be a performance of classic stage musical Bye Bye Birdie, featuring some of the area’s young talent.
The play, first performed on Broadway in 1960, tells the story of an Elvis-inspired 1950s rock star trying to write one last song before going overseas for the military. The on-stage performers will be made up of students from the 6th to 12th grade, selected through an audition process. The young talent will be supported by veteran artistic staff such as director Jason Summers, choreographer Jesse Pellegrino, and Allison Friedman.
The Port Summer Show has been a tradition for five decades, featuring young talent and family-friendly musicals. Past productions include Mary Poppins and Beauty & the Beast. Youth also participate in volunteer opportunities behind the scenes for positions in the orchestra pit and on the stage crew, with the goal of imparting life skills as well as theatrical ones.
The program is supported by local sponsors and fundraising events such as a mini-carnival and car wash held earlier in the summer. Community theatrical productions often draw on local community businesses, such as Print shops for advertising and vintage clothing stores for costumes.
The Port Summer Show production of Bye Bye Birdie will take the stage from Friday, August 1 to Sunday, August 3 at Schreiber High School in Port Washington.
