Donors to plunge in Port Washington

Port Washington area residents will brave the cold water as the town hosts the regional edition of the Polar Bear Plunge.

The popular challenge encourages donors to wade into outdoor water during the depths of winter, all to raise money for a charitable cause. The Port Washington event will be part of the broader Polar Bear Plunge New York challenge, which raises money for the state’s Special Olympics organizations. Money raised will go towards helping individuals with mental disabilities explore sport and recreation.

Participants in Port Washington will wade into the Hempstead Harbor for as long as they can manage. Plungers can enter individually or as part of a team that pools donations, with a leaderboard recognizing top donors and teams. Donors of over $150 can receive an official plunge sweatshirt. Charitable events and challenges like this often use clothing and other Promotional Products to help commemorate the occasion.

Other donation incentives include scarves, blankets, and cooler Bags. The Plunge aims to raise $70, 000 to support the Special Olympics, as part of a $450, 000 statewide goal. In addition to the North Hempstead event in Port Washington there are Plunges throughout New York state in March, from Dutchess County to Oyster Bay.

The 2026 North Hempstead Polar Plunge will take place on the morning of March 7 at North Hempstead Beach in Port Washington.
