Unauthorized parking will be a lot chancier in the Port Washington Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) lots due to the acquisition of new high speed mobile parking lot cameras.
Cameras imported from Canada have been mounted on police cars to make it easier and less expensive to ticket those who are not authorized to park in the LIRR lots. Nonresidents who have come here to travel the only LIRR line that goes straight through to Penn Station, bypassing Jamaica, have made it difficult for those who live in Port Washington to park at the station.
The new cameras will enable those who have paid for parking privileges to be able to find a parking spot more easily. How to register, and the increased likelihood of getting caught if one has not paid for parking privileges as well as the fine that can be incurred, could all be included in Brochures made available at the railway station and other areas around town.
The city will save money as it will no longer be necessary to hire individually to check 1,000 parking slots for permit stickers and vouchers. A yearly parking permit for the LIRR lot costs $255 a year. The new technology comes with a $50,000 price tag but Port Washington anticipates recouping that money in two years. Registration of a vehicle can be completed online.
