Spring has arrived for both the Port Washington area and the Queens County Farm Museum, which means the sheep to lose their thick coats of wool. This fleece will be put to use in a variety of ways, and these will be explored during the museum's upcoming Sheep Shearing Festival.
While the festivities will be focused on sheep, all textiles will be included in the celebration of the assorted fiber arts. All ages are encouraged to visit the farm so they can meet the sheep and other animals that call it home, while becoming better informed about the important role agriculture plays in society.
While they browse through the farm, guests can learn about needle felting and other crafts made using wool, and they can even try their hand at making an item to take home as a souvenir of the day. Con Edison’s Ecology Booth will be on site providing demonstrations of composting using worms (vermiculture), and if they wish, the kids can even take part in the “adopt a worm” program.
While the kids have fun exploring what the festival has to offer, the beer tent will be open, and food will be available as well. A plant sale, hayride, and live entertainment are also on the agenda. A banner printing company can be counted on to prepare signage for an event like this, which can help to make sure the visitors enjoy their time.
Queens County Farm Museum has set Saturday, May 11 as the date for this salute to its sheep. All tickets are $5 each.
