A Long Island native propelled his wheelchair from Montauk Point to Port Washington’s North Shore Animal League America, arriving at his destination on Friday, October 9.
The reason Gabriel Cordell set out on his weeklong trip was to raise awareness for those with disabilities, as well as to support the cause of homeless animals. Upon his arrival, a tired Cordell was greeted by applause from well-wishers for his feat of determination and strength.
The journey was not an easy one for Cordell who had to brave numerous hazards while maneuvering his wheelchair, which is not motorized, across the busy thoroughfares of Long Island. He made the trip as a reminder to drivers that it is not just cars that use the roadways, as well as to raise money for the no-kill animal shelter located in Port Washington.
Animal shelters and their supports use a variety of methods to raise funds, including featuring shelter animals on Calendars to sell to animal lovers.
Upon his arrival, the weary wheelchair traveler was presented with an award from North Shore Animal League America representative Jill Burkhart, and accolades from staff. The shelter will be putting the funds raised by Cordell towards increasing its efforts to rescue homeless animals. According to Burkhart, the shelter is in the process of adding a state-of-the-art, 14,000-square-foot second floor feline adoption center where cats can enjoy a cage-free environment.Get a Free Quote for Calendars
