Port Washington residents looking to learn about their local history should take note that the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is hosting informative walking tours this fall.
The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is an organization that dedicates itself to teaching people about the history and livelihoods of past inhabitants who built Port Washington up to what it is today. Its walking tour program, called the Magical History Tours, traverses the shoreline of Manhasset Bay, covering various historical landmarks in Port Washington and focusing on topics significant to the growth of the town. These topics include the livelihoods of the past residents, such as aviation, sand mining, tidal mills, shell fishing, and the hospitality industry.
The tour program began in September and will continue into the month of October. The next tours are scheduled for Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 at 11:00 am, and they last approximately one-and-a-half hours with intermittent rest stops. The Town Dock will be the designated meeting place, and attendees are encouraged to bring a packed lunch to enjoy at the end.
There is no cost to participate. Participants should check the society’s website for updates should bad weather conditions arise. Organizers of such events often enlist the help of businesses offering brochure printing to help communicate the specifics of their tours.
