With its colorful "Japanese" setting, tuneful music, and witty lyrics, the operetta is one of the most popular and often-performed pieces of musical theater in the world. "The Mikado,” or “the Town of Titipu," was first performed at the Savoy Theater in London on March 14, 1885. Its run of 672 performances was record-setting at the time.
As usual with the Savoy operas, an exotic setting is a thin disguise for Gilbert and Sullivan's satiric treatment of British customs and institutions. The Japanese theme was fashionable at the time, due to the recent increase in trade between that country and the West, although the story that the librettist was inspired by an exhibition of Japanese art and culture in Knightsbridge cannot be true, as Act I was completed months before the exhibition opened.
The Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island was founded in 1954 and is among the oldest organizations in the nation which dedicate themselves to the performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's works.Get a Free Quote for Print
