Long Island to be host for final Ringling Bros. Circus

The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum will be the final location for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The coliseum is in Uniondale, which is located near the cities of Farmingdale, Massapequa, Hempstead and Levittown.

Known as “The Greatest Show on Earth”, the circus has been entertaining families for 146 years. Anytime the circus was coming to town, residents would begin to see Flyers and Banners for months before the event and would anxiously await its arrival.

With tickets sales declining over the years the circus has struggled to stay afloat. When they stopped using elephants in its show, ticket sales declined even further. Chairman and CEO, Kenneth Feld, recently posted a statement on the circus’ website notifying the public of the family’s tough decision to end the show with a final performance in May. Feld’s family has owned the circus for fifty years, taking ownership in 1967.

The circus employs approximately 500 people who will lose their jobs when the circus closes. The owners of the circus will ensure that all of the animals find homes.

The final performances will be held from May 12th through the 21st at the coliseum, which recently underwent renovations. There will be several performances on some days and tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster. Prices vary depending on the date and time of attendance. Children aged two and older must have a ticket to enter.
