July schedule offers range of educational courses

The Zion Summer S.T.E.M. Academy will present a series of high school summer courses in Farmingdale throughout this month.

The program is in partnership with the Zion Youth and Family Community Center of Elmont. The mission of the center is to empower the residents of the local community.

The week of July 14 is the first week of the program and will present ‘Robotics, Engineering, and Technology’. The students will be taught how to identify problems in the real world and how to search web resources. They will also design an autonomous robot following by building and programming it.

Week two of the summer season, July 21 - 25, the course will feature ‘Media Arts, Pre-health Profession Exploration, and Film Editing’. Exploring career paths in these disciplines will be the focus. The students will learn how to create mini-movies and assemble the shots in a sequence that makes sense. The media arts session teaches ethnographies in journalism.

The week of July 28, ‘Biogeography: Exploration of Long Island’s Bio-Diversity’ is the course program. It is an outdoor offering as students use critical thinking skills and hands-on study. Examining areas such as freshwater rivers, salt marshes, and forests will be included.

Local Print companies work with academic program organizers frequently to supply the materials needed for courses. Poster printing is common as the Posters are used to market the information for the city.

The final week for the high school summer program will feature computer game design. For more information, visit the Zion website.
