The renovation of Geiger Lake Memorial Park in Wyandanch, about five miles from Farmingdale, is almost complete.
Babylon Town has been working on redeveloping the park, which comprises 23.4 acres, since 2011, and is racing to finish before funding expires. The project is part of Wyandanch Rising, an initiative to help revitalize the community.
Previously, the park had a playground, basketball courts, baseball fields and a pool, but was generally underused and became run down. The rework has been done in several phases. The first, which was finished two years ago, includes a pavilion comprising 2,500 square feet, and a spray park measuring 14,400 square feet.
The next phase is constructing a botanical garden and a playground. For this work, Babylon Town received a block grant of $700,000 that must be used by the end of 2015. Peter Casserly, a consultant, said finishing was a challenge but he was sure the work would be finished on time.
Improvements include working on the infrastructure and improving the lighting, as well as installing slate-topped benches that are part of a rose arbor. An English-style cottage will serve as the hub for utilities serving the park. Brick pathways and stone bridges are also being planned, and eventually, sensory, rhododendron, and Japanese gardens will added.
Town officials might create colorful Banners to hang throughout the park to celebrate its reopening.Get a Free Quote for Banners
