Thousands expected at canal festival near Clifton Park

As a signature event in the Capital Region, The Waterford Canal Festival near Clifton Park will celebrate its 40th anniversary next month.

Each year the community festival attracts thousands of residents and visitors, many of them aboard boats, to the waterfront that is the gateway to the Erie and Champlain Canal lock systems.

The celebration of the area’s rich history will also feature children’s activities such as balloon animals, a bouncy house and face painting, as well as live music, water sports, cycling and walking tours, boat rides and more. Musical performers will include up-and-coming youth musicians playing in the band The Word.

This year the festival will honor the first canal boat to travel from Buffalo to New York City on the Erie Canal. A replica of the Seneca Chief will be available for public tours.

In addition, attendees can enjoy browsing artisan and retail vendor booths as well as those offering selections of food and refreshments.

The Waterford festival near Clifton Park will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 1 Tugboat Alley. Admission is free but there will be fees for some activities. Further information, including a schedule of events is available on the festival website.
