Guided tours of the Nevada State Prison (NSP) Historic Site resume next month in Carson City.
Presented by the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, the informative tours offer visitors a glimpse into the past. Non-profit societies such as this often enlist the services of local Print shops to provide Letterheads for their correspondence.
Knowledgeable guides will take groups of 15 participants on the 90-minute walking tour, which includes a climb of 60 steps. The prison visit may not be suitable for all as a stop at the execution chamber is included.
The prison, now on the National Register of Historic Places, was decommissioned in 2012 and then began the move to make it an educational site.
Once NSP closed, the preservation society was created to save the site for future generations and the non-profit group worked for years to improve the facility to a point that would allow for public access.
The prison was important to the history of the region and some interesting facts were even chronicled by Mark Twain. Twain wrote that inmates of the prison were involved in a variety of nefarious acts that added to the intrigue of the prison history.
The first tour of the year at the Nevada State Prison will be held May 10, 2025 at 3301 Warm Springs Court in Carson City.
