Public helped Albuquerques Roadrunner Food Bank to help others

Residents of Albuquerque and the surrounding area recently had a chance to share their good fortune with those in need throughout the local community.

To make this as easy as possible, the Albuquerque Journal newspaper included a brown bag in one of its recent editions. Readers were asked to fill the paper grocery bag with as many non-perishables as they could, and then drop them off at the newspaper’s offices.

These collection Bags can be produced by a company that prints ad specialties and other items. They could also place them next to mailboxes where they would be picked up by letter carriers who were doing their regular Saturday routes. They took them to the postal substations, which were also acting as drop-off points for anyone who wished to contribute.

All the contributions made their way to the Roadrunner Food Bank, which along with these collection points had a truck parked at the ABQ Uptown shopping mall where the public could leave their nonperishable food items.

Last year, over 180,000lb of food was collected through this Holiday Food Drive, and it is hoped that this year’s amount will be the same or even greater.

According to a spokeswoman for Roadrunner Food Bank, Sonya Warwick, the public’s generosity can make a real difference in the lives of people throughout the city who have issues with food security.
