No incentives to bring Amazon facilities to Albuquerque

Later this year, Amazon will open one of the largest development projects the Albuquerque area has seen in recent years, the Upper Petroglyphs development, yet no incentive money was used to bring this project to fruition.

Amazon will employ more than 1,500 at their new sortation and fulfillment centers at the 1,200-acre Upper Petroglyphs development. According to Eileen Hards, a public relations specialist with Amazon Operations, the sortation center will cover more than 270,000 square feet and the fulfillment center will be more than twice as large at 650,000 square feet.

Commissioner Debbie O’Malley explained that Bernalillo County did spend $6.5 million to support the Upper Petroglyphs industrial park. The money was used for public infrastructure in proximity to the new Amazon facility, but the company did not receive the money directly. O’Malley said that most of that money has been recouped by Bernalillo County in fees Amazon has paid.

Over the next eight years it is estimated that construction within the Upper Petroglyphs is anticipated to support 649 jobs directly averaging approximately $45,000 per year. Once the facilities of Upper Petroglyph, including Amazon, are fully operational it is estimated that the County will gain around 2,328 new residents.

The City of Albuquerque is estimated to receive an additional $166 million in tax revenue from Amazon over the next 30 years.
