Folk music carnival brings Mayhem to Albuquerque
An event combining music, carnival culture and costumes is coming to the Fusion arts venue in Albuquerque for the second annual Sadness, Madness and Mayhem celebration.
The event is put on by Dust City Opera, an alternative rock orchestra based in Albuquerque.
Dust City Opera frontman Paul Hunton takes musical inspiration from Tom Waits and Soundgarden. The likes of horror authors H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King inspired the mythology behind the music. Hunton formed the band in 2018 in part to process the grief after his parents passed away.
The Mayhem 2025 event incorporates more than just music. It is meant to be a celebration of circus culture, exemplified by carnival games, fair food, and over-the-top costumes.
Music is also a huge part of the event, particularly with an alt-folk focus. Other than Dust City Opera performing, entertainment is provided by the Giovanni String Quartet.
Carnival events like these may choose to use banner printing for low-cost stage decoration and poster printing for marketing.
The first Sadness, Madness and Mayhem event was held back in January of 2024 and sold out early. Organizers of this year’s event say it's even bigger and bolder than last time.
Dust City Opera’s second annual Sadness, Madness and Mayhem haunted costume carnival comes to the Fusion arts venue in Albuquerque on March 1.
