Cultural festival to light up Albuquerque

The Gathering of Nations Pow Wow, recognized as one of the largest gatherings of Native American and Indigenous peoples in the world, will be held in late April.

The festival serves as a vibrant showcase for Native American traditions, including singing, dancing, and drumming, highlighting the cultural richness and diversity of Indigenous communities.

The event features competitive dances and songs, which are central to the Pow Wow, celebrating the cultural heritage and spiritual practices of Native American peoples. The Gathering of Nations also includes the Indian Traders Market, offering a variety of traditional crafts, jewelry, and arts, crafted by Indigenous artisans. This market is not only a place for economic exchange but also a cultural bridge, allowing attendees to engage directly with the material culture of various tribes. Banner printing is a common feature at festivals.

Another key component of the Gathering is the Miss Indian World pageant. This competition selects a young Indigenous woman to serve as a cultural ambassador for the year, emphasizing cultural knowledge, dance proficiency, and eloquence, rather than conventional beauty standards alone.

Native American heritage and the tribal countries that comprise the Horse Nation are honored during the Horse & Rider Regalia Parade, where participants will be competing for the prize of Best in Show.

Scheduled for April 25 to 27, this event is a significant cultural assembly, drawing participants from over 700 tribes across Canada and the United States to Albuquerque.
