Artists sought for Sunport renovations

Albuquerque is inviting talented artists to participate in the Sunport Terminal Renovation Project.

Sunport officials are currently seeking a number of projects and are specifically interested in filling the vacant spaces that will serve as the new main food court, replacing the previous TSA site. Poster printing could be used for art installations.

Artists such as Howard Meehan and Bill Freer eagerly gathered at the bustling Historic Old Terminal, eagerly anticipating the announcement of the latest public art callout. Having collaborated on notable public art installations such as the Gallup Memorial Plaza, Bill Freer and Howard Meehan, along with hundreds of other artists, are now submitting their names for consideration in the upcoming art installations at Sunport. Meehan went on to say:

“This gives us a chance to sit down and listen to other people and how they’re approaching this whole project. I’m from New York, and I’ve been through a lot of airports and Bill has too, but just seeing this place right away this place is unique.”

The funding for the Sunport renovation, totaling $87m, will be allocated toward the art installations as well. According to Manny Manriquez who is the Sunport Innovation and Commercial Development Manager, the art budget for the project is considerably larger than what is typically allocated.

The art budget is about $3m which is 4% of the total project cost. This surpasses the conventional 1% allocation, signifying a substantial increase.
