Albuquerque workshop teaches oil panting techniques

A weekend workshop will offer participants the chance to create a colorful oil portrait, whether they are experienced artists or newcomers.

Natalie Voelker’s A Portrait Painting in a Weekend (Oils) uses a direct painting approach that does not require prior experience, unlike other painting techniques.

When oil painting there are two starting options available which are the direct paint method and oil transfer method. Attendees can use value, or shades of light and dark, to start creating the face. Balancing out the different colors is important when making such artwork.

It is important that all participants bring their own materials. There is a list of required materials available on the retailer’s website. They should also carry two Copies of their photo references. The printed reference photo should be the same size as the working surface. If participants have difficulty in choosing which photograph they want for their pieces, they are allowed to bring alternative images. Print shops could be used to make custom printouts.

The sessions are set up in a way that balances basic technique teaching and room for creativity. Halfway through each session participants will have a rest period during the scheduled break time.

The workshop will take place over two days: Saturday, November 16th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, November 17th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque.
